What’s Causing Your Neck Pain?
Neck pain is commonly caused by muscles pulling on the vertebral bones and stressing the joints. When your head really isn’t on straight your entire spine will go out of alignment and will not be correct until your head is back where it belongs. Your skull may be out of alignment from:
- A traumatic situation such as whiplash
- Neck pain
- Whiplash pain
- The way you sleep
- The location of the monitor for your computer
- Anything that keeps your head bent all the way toward the back, such as painting a ceiling, or you spend hours riding a bike in the aerodynamic position
Neck problems can plague you for your entire life, but are usually preventable if you release the tension the muscles are placing on your cervical spine and skull.
Follow along. This is interesting and explains why you get blinding headaches that feel like a hot poker is being pushed into your skull, and why the same problem can be felt all the way down your back and into your hips, legs, and even all the way to your feet.
The Muscles Involved
The skull and spine are an amazing engineering design. Your head protects your brain and, as you know, your brain is the beginning of your spinal cord.
Have you ever had an accident and you end up with whiplash? Whiplash is a serious condition that happens when a person has an accident that literally “whips” the head back and forth. The weight of the skull as it flies forward and then whips backward and then forward again totally overstretches each of the muscles of the neck and upper back. The muscles snap back into multiple knots, and these knots are now pulling the cervical vertebrae every which way. Pressure is on the spinal cord all the way from the base of your brain, along your entire spine, even causing pain in the middle of your back.
Cyclists spend hours with their head held all the way back so they can see in front of them. If you’re a cyclist, lean forward like you’re in the aerodynamic position, bend your neck so you can see in front of you, and then stand up straight. You’ll see that you’re looking at the ceiling. Someone who is painting a ceiling is in the same position, but not for as many hours at a time, and certainly not as frequently as an ultracyclist who rides every week for hours and hours at a time.
How to Relieve Neck Pain
To get relief, you need to treat every muscle of your neck, your shoulders, and your entire back in order to release the tension on the vertebrae and your spinal cord.
In other words, doing the full Julstro Protocol, and the treatments for your neck and shoulders will straighten you from your head to your toes. It sounds like a lot, but whiplash, or any neck injury, is a serious condition and one that can last for years if the muscles aren’t released. Self-treatment is vital, and I also suggest that you find a massage therapist who is trained in trigger point therapy. You need to untie the knots in the muscles and the sooner, the better. I strongly suggest you don’t stretch any of these muscles until you have completely released all of the trigger points.
